Micah Rios Hernandez

"What have you been up to?”

“Thinking about my failures. My mistakes. The gap in my life. The freedom I used to have. How much it sucks being locked up, and how much more bearable it would be if he was here to brighten it.” He turns to Jed. “The usual. What did Jane want?”

Biography: Micah Rios is a longsuffering Tejano man with two bad habits: smoking and falling in love far too easily. He’s borne witness to a lot of strange things in his life, so nothing really phases him anymore – not even living in a history museum a century and a quarter in the future. He’s often serious and quiet, though he’ll always volunteer to help if someone needs it. He just prefers to stay in the background. When it comes to fighting the Romans, though, it’s good to remember that it’s always the quiet ones you have to look out for. When he isn’t kicking Roman ass, he prefers to spend his time hanging out in Leung’s Bar with Luke, his partner, and their kids, Max and Maria.

If Luke is the punching bag, Micah is the chain holding him up. He's one of my absolute favorite characters to write just because he's so complicated. He's used to living on his own, and he has such bad self-esteem issues that he can't really believe that Luke is interested in him, but at the same time, he needs Luke's companionship so badly that when he dies, it breaks him on such a fundamental level that decades pass and he's still feeling the aftereffects. God, I love him. He has so many problems.

Luke and Micah are a very fun relationship to write. They are so ridiculously codependent and frankly unhealthy, but I can't stand to make them functional. They are defined by one another. Somewhere in some very old character notes, I once wrote "Luke and Micah - gotta figure out how to get them together or something", and boy did I not know what was gonna happen with that one! Their ship is the Pomegranates, or the Poms for short, because a friend once suggested the concept of the museum miniatures making a pinup calendar and said that Luke would get to be pomegranate themed, because he refuses to acknowledge Thanksgiving, and I instantly thought of that one Tumblr post where the person asked for a photo of a pomegranate to be tagged as gore.

So... now they're the pomegranates.
